About Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is a vinyāsa based yoga system. It is a method of practicing āsanas (poses) in a therapeutic sequence where every movement is synchronized with the breath.
Vinyāsa means “movement linked with the breath.” The breath initiates the movement on the inhale or the exhale. Breathing techniques, bandhas or internal locks are used to move the breath along the central column of the spine.

There are 9 drishtis (focus point) and each āsanas has a drishti associated to it. The Primary Series has therapeutic benefits that bring balance to the physical body. The series begins with Sūrya namaskāra A and B then moves through a series of standing poses and then to a series of seated asanas.

Backbends are optional. Make sure to always finish your practice with some of the finishing poses and Śavāsana. By using this cards you can learn to memorize the sequence, learn the names of the āsanas, simple instructions, modifications and benefits.

The Ashtanga Primary Series is a sequence of postures that will open your mind, body and heart. This is a spiritual practice. A regular practice will help you to create an internal fire that strengthens the body, detoxifies the inner organs and increases flexibility.

The ultimate purpose of the Ashtanga practice is to purify the body and mind. This practice has a strong sense of purpose and you are forced to focus and grow.
